1 NOTE Leonard Shown, of northern VA, came south with his brother, seeking his fortune.  In what i
2 CONC s now Wythe Co., VA, he met his wife.  In Oct/Dec 1792, this couple walked over the mountai
2 CONC n "Barbara carrying their first son, unborn, and Leonard carrying an ax, a pick and a bundl
2 CONC e of clothing."  He was 19 and she was 17 years old.  They produced 17 children who survive
2 CONC d to adulthood and founded the community of Shouns Crossroads, in what became Mountain City
2 CONC , Johnson County, TN.  A 12 foot tall fieldstone and concrete monument marks their graves the
2 CONC re.  Leonard owned a large homestead at Shouns, and a larger land grant on Doe Creek.  (He ob
2 CONC tained larger land grants from the government by operating an iron forge for production of pi
2 CONC g iron.)  Leonard owned several slaves, the best bottom land in the area, and a country store
2 CONC .  He had goods hauled from Baltimore, a distance of nearly 400 miles which took 6 months fo
2 CONC r a round trip.  His pig iron was hauled to Lynchburg, 225 miles away.  When he died, at ag
2 CONC e 72, he was one of the wealthiest men in Johnson County.

2 CONT Leonard was illiterate.  He kept his own merchantile records using symbols.  The story is tha
2 CONC t once he charged a customer for a cheese when the man had purchased a grindstone and Leonar
2 CONC d had neglected to put a hole in the center of the circle.  The men nearly came to blows befo
2 CONC re they reasoned out the explanation.

2 CONT The Shoun family historian, Ed Miller has over 10,000 Shoun descendants in his computer.  I e
2 CONC stimate that he has found about one-quarter of the descendants of this couple.

2 CONC 778) and his son, Dr. Mike were doing research on the property owned by Johannes Schaun and h
2 CONC ad contacted Mr. Coombs for informatioon on the original farm. Here is a letter written by Mr
2 CONC . Coombs to Mike that should be of great interest to all of the blood relatives."As far a
2 CONC s we can determine, Johannes Shoun lived in this area late in his life. Prior to 1762 he occu
2 CONC pied vacant land adjacent to Thomas Larimer ("Fox Grove"). John's warrant for fifty acres fro
2 CONC m the Penn farmily Proprietors, dated June 2, 1762, lists Ludwig Miller and Jacob Sheely as b
2 CONC eing abutting neighbors. This can be seen on the large folded map which shows the 1700's warr
2 CONC ants in our area. Johannes or John Shoun (Schaum) was listed in the county census of 1762."
2 CONC Johannes died shortly after he had the property surveyed (August 22, 1766), as required unde
2 CONC r the warrant. This is indicated by the dates of the Inventory of his possessions (November 1
2 CONC 1, 1766) and the probate of his will (December 9, 1766). As you can see from the survey, th
2 CONC e farm was named "Glade." Nancy I are perpetuating the use of that name today. [I believe thi
2 CONC s man left our "and" to read "Nancy, (his wife?) and I"?] "According to Johannes' will, hi
2 CONC s wife, Anna Marie/Mary, had the use of the land for the duration of her life. At Anna Marie'
2 CONC s death the farm devolved to their eldest son, Isaac. Isaac is listed as a landowner in the c
2 CONC ounty census records for 1768. As you know, Isaac left the farm sometime prior to 1771."Th
2 CONC e next name that we find on the land is Nicholas Shown, Johannes' youngest son. He is mentioo
2 CONC ned in the county census records for 1778, 1779 and 1780. Inn the tax role of 1778, Nichola
2 CONC s is listed, but there is a note that the lands are "for rent.""Sometime after 1797, Nichol
2 CONC as also left the area and Thomas Larimer came into possession of the farm. Thomas gifted lan
2 CONC d to his son William who in turn sold some to Moses McIlvain, his brother-in-law. Thomas als
2 CONC o appears to have given Moses adjacent lands because by March 18, 1798 Moses' farm had double
2 CONC d in size to 100 acres. From this point on there is no mention of the Shoun family in the are

2 CONC d smelting it, casting it into "pigs" which were transported to larger towns to be "wrought
2 CONC " into useable goods.  Cutting the huge volumes of wood to make charcoal to melt the iron ou
2 CONC t of the ore was horrendously grinding work.  And of course, when the Bessemer process, (muc
