Notes for Johannes SHAUN, IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR

Immigrated ca 1741 Rotterdam to Philadelphia

Mr. Whitney Coombs of 86 Roberts Road, Littlestown, PA 17325 now lives on the land that was once owned by our own Johannes Schaun and his family. Our Progenitor, Kermit T. Shoun (Isa- 15778) and his son, Dr. Mike were doing research on the property owned by Johannes Schaun and had contacted Mr. Coombs for informatioon on the original farm. Here is a letter written by Mr. Coombs to Mike that should be of great interest to all of the blood relatives. "As far as we can determine, Johannes Shoun lived in this area late in his life. Prior to 1762 he occupied vacant land adjacent to Thomas Larimer ("Fox Grove"). John's warrant for fifty acres from the Penn farmily Proprietors, dated June 2, 1762, lists Ludwig Miller and Jacob Sheely as being abutting neighbors. This can be seen on the large folded map which shows the 1700's warrants in our area. Johannes or John Shoun (Schaum) was listed in the county census of 1762. "Johannes died shortly after he had the property surveyed (August 22, 1766), as required under the warrant. This is indicated by the dates of the Inventory of his possessions (November 11, 1766) and the probate of his will (December 9, 1766). As you can see from the survey, the farm was named "Glade." Nancy and I are perpetuating the use of that name today. "According to Johannes' will, his wife, Anna Marie/Mary, had the use of the land for the duration of her life. At Anna Marie's death the farm devolved to their eldest son, Isaac. Isaac is listed as a landowner in the county census records for 1768. As you know, Isaac left the farm sometime prior to 1771. "The next name that we find on the land is Nicholas Shown, Johannes' youngest son. He is mentiooned in the county census records for 1778, 1779 and 1780. Inn the tax role of 1778, Nicholas is listed, but there is a note that the lands are "for rent." "Sometime after 1797, Nicholas also left the area and Thomas Larimer came into possession of the farm. Thomas gifted land to his son William who in turn sold some to Moses McIlvain, his brother-in-law. Thomas also appears to have given Moses adjacent lands because by March 18, 1798 Moses' farm had doubled in size to 100 acres. From this point on there is no mention of the Shoun family in the area."
