Notes for John THROCKMORTON, SR IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR


Apprenticed on 20 Mar 1620 to Robert Debney, Alderman of Norwich for 7 1/2 years to learn art & mystery of a scrivner.

Had legal training in London.

Immigrated with wife & children aboard the Lyon with Roger Williams to Massachusetts Bay. The Lyon had sailed from Bristol, England, Dec 1st, arrived 5 Mar 1631.

Became a marine merchant, trading goods between coastal cities in the colonies.

1634 Moved to Salem,Mass.

Excommunicated with Roger Williams.

Moved 1636 with 13 other heads of households to found Providence, RI.

1 Jul 1639 Had a great censure placed upon him and wife by Hugh Peters & the Salem Church.

1642-45, moved to Throg's or Throckmorton's Neck, Westchester Co.,NY, with 35 others, including Ann Hutchinson and her children. Settlement there destroyed by Indians. Ann and her children all killed, more than one Throckmorton family member killed, according to Governor Winthrop's journal.

Granted patent for land on Long Island 19 Dec 1645 by Peter Stuyvessant.

1647/48 granted Ed Cope's house in Providence.

Returned to Warwicke,RI by 1651, remained there a short time.

One of original subscribers for land in East New Jersey, at Middletown,Monmouth Co.

In later life, became a violent Quaker - quarreled with old friend Roger Williams.

Died while visiting sons in NJ
